Does Hinduism allow abortion?

The stand of Hinduism in case of abortion is very clear and upfront. Abortion has been indeed listed as one of the very heinous crimes in the Vedas and Upanishads. In some cases, abortion or killing of the male fetus is considered as the killing of a Brahman male adult.

Though it is very clearly stated in the Hindu religious books, the ideology of each and every Hindu varies when it comes to abortion and the same cannot be summarized.

None the less, there are also certain exceptions to the idea of abortion in Hinduism. In cases where the mother's life is in risk because of the fetus, abortion can be done. Such a scenario is not considered in the list of crimes.

In my personal view, abortion is indeed a heinous crime and I firmly believe that the exception that has been created for mother whose life is in danger because of the embryo is fair enough.

The only thing that bothers here is the discrimination between male and female fetus.
