Kamasutram, generally known to the Western world as Kama Sutra, is an ancient Indian text on human sexual behavior, widely considered to be the standard work on love in Sanskrit literature. The text was composed by Vatsyayana, as a brief summary of various earlier works belonging to a tradition known generically as Kama Shastra, the science of love. Kama is literally desire. Sutra signifies a thread, or discourse threaded on a series of aphorisms. Sutra was a standard term for a technical text, thus also the Yogasutram of Patanjali. The text is originally known as Vatsyayana Kamasutram ("Vatsyayana's Aphorisms on Love"). Tradition holds that the author was a celibate scholar. He is believed to have lived sometime between the 1st to 6th centuries AD.

The erotic carvings on the Khajuraho temple complex in central India were created to prevent the rain God Indra from accidentally striking the Holy place with lightning. Situated in Central India, Madhya Pradesh, in the state of Madhya Pradesh, Khajuraho is a fascinating village with a quaint rural ambience and a rich cultural heritage. The fascinating temples of Khajuraho, Khajuraho temples had been constructed between 950 and 1050 A.D. during the reign of Chandel Empire. These temples are considered the "high point" of Indian architectural genius in the medieval period

Originally there were 85 temples, of which only 22 still exist. The erotic carvings of the temples give the place it's fame. Erotic or not the level of detail is quite magnificent as these pictures clearly do show. These temples depict scenes from elephant fights, mythical lions, gods, and erotic couples. In a frieze that seemed to be an exception a sodomistic scene was depicted where onlookers hold their hands in front of their eyes in disgust. The erotic scenes are sort of a 3-D rendering of the Kama Sutra book, a graphical instruction manual.
