    Namaste:

All life is sacred in the Hindu religion. Because of the nature of the cow, in its usefulness, (transportation, milk, etc.) and character (gentleness) it has become a symbol for all life that is sacred.

I agree with Senthil that Hindus honor all living creatures.

Actually Hinduism is a thought process with full freedom and cow is very important part of nature’s balance, where in cow is revered to as a source of food & which is symbol of life hence it may never be killed
Cow’s basic nature is very gentle which is part of basic teaching of Hinduism which includes peace, non-violence (ahimsa) and simultaneously cow also represents ghee and which gives strength.
Cow has been very important part of Hindu life even if we look at Lord Krishna’s life, cow remains very important part of his life likewise for Hindus cow remain important part of not only their daily life that starts with cow’s milk but also in many occasions and festivals cow dung, cow urine is needed.

Cows are important for eco-balance. Krishna is known as Gopal. 'Go' means prithvi. 'pal' means protector. Krishna respects cow because of that. Also kamdhenu is supposed to be the one that gives all divine blessings. In sanskrit cow is called dhenu not 'gay' or 'go'.
Transportation is not correct. For that, bulls may be used never cow which is highly respected.

Hindus regard all living creatures as sacred – mammals, fishes, birds and more.
To the Hindu, the cow symbolizes all other creatures. The cow is a symbol of the Earth, the nourisher, the ever-giving, undemanding provider. The cow represents life and the sustenance of life.

They were suppose to but Hinduism has changed so much these days, and Hinduism is a western term, this was not the name of the practices of the Indus Valley Civilization.

Even Zorastrians considered Cows to hold the soul of the plant Earth. All animals should be considered holy, because they all contain the essence of God Self.
